There are many new teachers who have joined the DB staff this year. One of these teachers is Steven Nave. Nave is a social studies teacher, and is excited to begin a new chapter of his career at Dobyns-Bennett. We asked Nave some questions about himself and his hopes for working at DB. His answers are below.

Tell us some facts about yourself. Where were you born and raised, did you go to college,
why are you living here in Kingsport, TN, and how long have you been a teacher?

I was born in Elizabethton, Tennessee and went to Hampton High School. I then attended ETSU for undergraduate getting a BS in History. I completed my masters degree at the University of Cincinnati and Education Specialist degree at Lincoln Memorial University. I worked at Johnson County High School for 15 years before moving to Taiwan to teach at an international school for 2 years. When I returned to the US from Taiwan, I was lucky enough to get hired at DB. This is my 18th year as a teacher.

Why did you decide to become a teacher?

I decided when I was in 4th grade that I wanted to be a teacher. I am not sure why at that age I made that choice, but I used the rest of my educational career to prepare for this profession.

What are you most excited for this school year?

I am most excited about being a part of such a wonderful school like DB. This is also my first year in a school this large. Previously, the schools I taught at were about 1/3 the size of DB. There are so many more opportunities to collaborate with colleagues considering there are more social studies teachers here than all teachers at my last school.

What do you hope to teach your students this year?

My goal for students is always to teach them to think and develop their own ideas and belief systems.

What are your hobbies?

My hobbies include playing golf, jiujitsu, crossfit, and travel.

What is your favorite TV show? Why?

At the moment my favorite TV show is 90 Day Fiance. I am intrigued by the stories of the people who will agree to get married without ever meeting the other person. This is such an insight into other cultures and the desire of many to come to the US. because of the conditions in their home country.

What do you like to do on the weekends?

On weekends I love to sleep. I am also a huge Miami Hurricane football fan, so my Saturday is planned around their game time.

Where is your favorite place to go on vacation? Why?

My favorite place to go on vacation is Rome. There is so much history integrated within the modern
city. Day trips to Venice, Naples, Florence and Pisa are a relatively short train ride which really makes the options for activities unlimited.

What is the best thing about teaching at DB?

The best thing about DB are the students. Students seem to have a pride in the success of the school
and want to keep DB the top school in the area and one of the top schools in the state and country.

Thank you, Mr. Nave, for letting the students of DB learn more about who you are!
