Dobyns-Bennett yet again made well of this year’s theme of tradition, pummeling their rival Sullivan South by a score of 67-53 at Buck Van Huss Dome on Friday February 3, 2012. This marked the second time the two teams played this season (two weeks prior the Indians won the first game at South 57-37). Much like the first game, D-B ruled the court, but this time right from the beginning.
D-B didn’t take long to get going, with Devaun Swafford and Connor Mitchel scoring back to back in the opening of the game. At the end of the first quarter, the score stood 12-8. The Indians were able to continue persistently scoring quick and often in the second quarter to push the score to 26-17 by halftime. “They had been playing really well again since the first time we played them. We knew we would have to play hard to win,” said senior Cory Combs.
At the start of the second half, South staged two come back efforts. However, the Rebels stood no chance, testing the Indians stellar defense. D-B had clearly established itself as the class of court, with a score of 44-33 at the end of the third quarter. The Indians weren’t done though, piling on 23 more points for a huge fourth quarter. This was all capped off by junior Tyleke Love shooting a three-pointer right at the buzzer to end the game. “The games always seem to play out a little differently at home than on the road. We just came out and played hard.” said Love.
The Indians never relinquished the lead throughout the duration of the game. Pulling off the season sweep of South, D-B now sits 14-9 overall and 10-3 in their district. The Tribe is set to play next on the road against Tennessee High on Tuesday, February 7th.
