O Christmas Tree, O Christmas Tree, whatever shall we do with thee?  Once Christmas is over, what should people do with their cut Christmas trees?  Actually, there are several ways to recycle Christmas trees.

Many cities have events in January called Chipping of the Green.  Kingsport was the first city in the country to hold Chipping of the Green for Christmas trees after the holiday season.  In 1989, Kingsport won the national Keep America Beautiful Recycling Award for the tree chipping event.  That first year, more than 20,000 trees were chipped at Warriors Path State Park and recycled into mulch, which people took home to use in their landscaping.  Chipping at Warriors Path was discontinued in 2008, because the number of trees being brought to the park had fallen to around 370, due to the increased use of artificial trees.

Kingsport residents can still place their trees at the curb and they will be picked up and chipped at the City dump, but they cannot get the mulch from their tree.  However, anyone can take their Christmas tree to Sycamore Shoals State Historic Area in Elizabethton, where they have a similar program, and keep the mulch to use at home.

Another environmentally friendly way to dispose of your tree is to let the Tennessee Wild Life Resource Agency place the tree in an area lake to create a habitat where fish can hide and find food.

Start the New Year off right by doing something good for the environment.
