Recently, The Dobyns-Bennett Arrowhead has made a step into the future of journalism by launching their new online edition. This site will keep the student body current on all the D-B news. The site will enhance student knowledge and hopefully raise student spirit and morale. Most students know of the print version, and it’s not uncommon knowledge that it’s very seldom read from front to back. The new site, www.dbarrowhead.com, is a very sophisticated site created by the owners of www.schoolpapersonline.com. They create up-scale websites for high school newspapers all over the country.

The Arrowhead is proud to be able to claim that they are the second newspaper in the state to have an online edition created by www.schoolpapersonline.com. The first high school in the state to have one made was Bartlett High School, just outside of Memphis, Tennessee. When asked how she felt about the launch, Rebekah Haren, the adviser to The Arrowhead, said, “I’m very excited. I feel like it will be a great way to involve students, parents, staff, alumni, and the community in the life of D-B.” Anna Heim, The Arrowhead’s Managing Editor, also commented, “I’m very excited, it’s an awesome opportunity for the current and future staff members.”

The site has many new and exciting capabilities that will make reading school news more fun for everyone. The site has the ability to upload podcasts, slide shows, and videos. Site visitors will also be able to participate in polls, comment on articles, and submit letters to the editor. Haren stated, “I hope the students and staff will respond positively to this site. We think they will love all capabilities they will have.”  Heim included, “I’m really hoping for a lot of positive response from the staff and especially the students.” She continued, “I feel like all the extra media capabilities will have a positive effect on the students.

The staff has set up a link from The Arrowhead website to Facebook; visit the page and become a fan. On the website you can also subscribe to receive e-mail updates daily of what new content has been added to the site. The site is easily navigated and includes many things such as event and sports calendars, staff biographies, pictures, and all the current news. Your opinion and feedback is very important to the staff and they ask you to comment and offer suggestions on what you think they should cover in their next print edition. You can also write letters to the editor from the school website and The Arrowhead website.

Haren is now accepting applications for next year’s staff. The staff positions range from editors to photographers to reporters. She encourages anyone interested to apply early, especially those interested in being editors. Editor positions aren’t reserved for just those returning staff members; all qualified applicants are eligible. The class is available both seventh and eighth singleton. Haren welcomes those interested to sign up for both singletons, especially those who want to be editors. So, if you want to be part of the quickly evolving and unique class, then please apply. Applications are available at www.dbarrowhead.com.

  1. Rhonda Heim Says:

I am a DB parent and alumni, and I have to say that I am very impressed with the professional work that the students and Mrs. Haren have put into building this site. Good job! Not only is this an excellent learning experience, but it is also “real world” experience for the very world that you students are building for the future of us all, in this ever-rising “global community” of today!

I hope that other high school courses follow your lead. Keep up the good work!
