BREAKING NEWS: Vampires can now marry!

Written by Emily Garrison, Editor-in-Chief

Wedding bells are ringing in the fourth movie of the “Twilight” series, Breaking Dawn- Part One. However, someone should be playing the funeral march on a trumpet when Bella says, “I do,” because (in case you missed the first three movies) her main reason for marrying Edward at the young age of eighteen is so she can become a vampire and not be eaten by the Volturi.

Everyone at the wedding of Edward and Bella is pleased—except for the few Quileute clan members who find out about Bella’s honeymoon plans. Their forced attention to Bella’s human health and well-being, along with Jacob’s unrequited love for her, push the werewolves slowly towards the edge. They are sent far over that edge when Jacob discovers that the Bella-in-hiding is actually soon to be mother to an unimaginable, and once thought to be impossible, killer.

SPOILER ALERT! Edward finally gets to bite Bella (and more than once—yum)! This is after he has to deliver his own child, who he had a slight hatred for, and inject his own venom into his dying wife’s heart. Even with all of that venom and gory sacrifice, Bella still dies…seriously. Aren’t vampires dead? Oh, another spoiler! But don’t tell Edward, because he doesn’t know yet! He’ll have to find out in part two.

Overall, this movie gets a three-and-a-half out of five stars rating from me. Though I am an avid fan of the “Twilight” series, the overwhelming theme of suffering did not settle well with me. Sophomore Abbey Harrison agreed, saying “This was not my favorite of the series. It was a little more focused than the others…” This focus proved to make Breaking Dawn- Part One slightly dry compared to its prequels. However, I did appreciate the original author’s choice of focusing on sex coming after marriage (even though the filmmakers focused quite a bit on the “after” part).

Although I only gave Breaking Dawn- Part One three and one-half stars, I must credit the filmmakers for earning over six-hundred million dollars so far. Here’s to hoping the second part will be better—and a little less gruesome—than the first!
